Back in March I reviewed Starburst Snakes and Ladders. Today I'll be looking at its sibling, Nought and Crosses.

Noughts and Crosses carries a similar idea to S&L - steal a game, mould its key pieces and put a board on the pack of the pack. Genius! Except S&L doesn't really carry over well; you need a die, and the board provided was a bit small for its large pieces. Noughts and Crosses, on the other hand, works a great deal better!

Snakes and Ladders is the online version of the much-loved classic board game in which you have to roll dice to try and reach the finish point faster than your opponent. Take turns with your opponent to roll dice, the number that the dice lands on is the number of squares that you can move your counter. With a series of traditional fruit machine symbols and a special Snakes & Ladders bonus feature, this slot is far from being your average classic. Plus, there is also a 12,000 credit jackpot up for grabs which can be won when three matching icons are aligned on any of the 5 paylines.

As for the packaging style of S&L and Noughts and Crosses, that mystery has been solved - they appear to be part of a new packaging overhaul of the brand.
Like S&L, the lollies here are made from the same powdered, firm jelly, with the same colours, as used in the Rattlesnakes bag - red, blue, green, yellow, orange and purple. (Interesting to note; the green in this pack is a different shade to the S&L pack.) Each piece is all one colour, though, and the pieces are far smaller than the ladders and snakes; they're each about 3cm in diameter, and about 1cm tall. The crosses are only in red, purple and green, with the noughts in orange, blue and yellow.
Red is some sort of berry flavour, possibly strawberry or raspberry. It's sweet, warm and bright.
Purple is also some rendition of berry, though I can't quite pick it. It's quite jammy, and less sweet than red.
Orange is, unsurprisingly, orange. It has a good strong citrus note, with a bit of peel thrown in for realism. It's also fairly sweet, reducing the tang somewhat.
Blue I speculated with S&L is possibly blue raspberry - that fictitious flavour created by lolly manufacturers. While it is flavourful and bright, it is not hugely sweet, and there's a little bit of tanginess on the end note.

Green I think is lime, but it could also be apple - the profile wasn't very distinct. There was a bit of a tangy kick towards the end, but it tasted pretty artifical either way. Not a winner for me
These get an extra point for actual playability, but other than that, they aren't so different to a lot of the other Starburst products that use the same collection of flavours, just in different moulds.

Starburst Noughts and Crosses are made in Australia. They contain glucose syrup (from wheat), and artificial colours and flavours. A serving size is two pieces. There is no allergen statement on the pack.Recently three new varieties of Starburst jellies have popped up at my local Coles supermarket - Noughts and Crosses, Snakes and Ladders, and Very Berry Chews. Today I'll be looking at Snakes and Ladders - and why does the pack look so different to other Starburst, anyway?

Unfortunately, I don't have an answer to that question! At first I thought that these were imported stock, but the back of the pack indicates these are made in Australia, along with its sibling, Noughts and Crosses. They seem to be unique to our fair country as well. I've been in contact with Wrigley's, the Australian distributor of Starburst, but have not yet heard back. I'll update if I do receive an answer!

The other notable feature of the Snakes and Ladders pack is the playable board on the back, enabling you to literally play with your food (provided you carry a die around with you). The board is rather small, and there are no instructions on the pack either, or player pieces. I suppose you could use a snake as your player piece.
The lollies themselves use the same jelly that is used for the Rattlesnakes product - a firm, brightly-coloured jelly that is given a non-oily coating to protect the pieces from sticking together. I'm no Starburst Rattlensake expert but I would hazard a guess that the moulds are the same. The snakes were all bi-coloured. The ladder pieces did not survive the pack well - most were squished and misshapen. Some were solid-coloured, some were bi-coloured. Each ladder measured about 4cm tall and 3cm wide, so they are quite large pieces.

The yellow jelly I think was lemon. The flavour is not strong; it's sweet and a little like (carbonated) lemonade. It had a nice tartness to it.
Green jelly is apple flavoured. Only at the very end did I get a semblance of green apple juice. There's a half-hearted tartness, but the flavour is mostly bland and uninteresting.
The purple jelly I think was some sort of berry. I would say it had a bit of a mild jammy note if I was pressed to give a description.

Red is strawberry. It's bright and warm and quite sweet and tasty. I'd happily eat a whole bag of this!
The orange jelly is orange flavour. I only got one lonely orange snake in my whole bag. It's a delicious and surprisingly juicy citrus flavour that is fairly similar to a real orange, just sweeter.
Blue is the problem child. It could be anything from blue raspberry to tropical (both common flavours for manufacturers to attribute to the colour). I got warm, juicy notes with a touch of berry that makes me lean towards blue raspberry for this one.
